| TS Ganges Holyhead This week has seen the closure of TS Ganges. On Wednesday 9th December the keys to the North West Areas’ premier boating station were handed back to the landlords – They being the Management Committee of TS Prince of Wales. Patrick Balfour (Chief of Staff MSSC) journeyed from HQ to officially decommission the boating station which has occupied leased premises on Holyhead’s Newry Beach for over 20 years. Incongruous really, that the lessors could not be bothered to keep the appointment, a most disrespectful affair, but not altogether surprising to those of you who have been aware of the events leading to the closure of TS Ganges. The Marine Society & Sea Cadets (MSSC), recognised Holyhead harbour as a safe haven for boating activities and numerous other outdoor pursuits, and was keen to improve the Boat Station facilities with a substantial investment in order that it remained an attractive maritime youth organisation. The MSSC also recognised and appreciated the very considerable support of ex Ganges boys, and the Ganges Association over the years, not only to TS Ganges but to the Sea Cadet Corps. However, in order for the MSSC to invest charitable monies a number of simple conditions needed to be met, essentially, a proper lease agreement with the landlords. A response to the lease agreement tabled was never forthcoming, and no reason why has ever been proffered by TS Prince of Wales - in fact no communication has ever been received from them – not surprising really that no one turned up to take back the keys!! And so – Holyhead Boating Station has been lost to hundreds of Sea Cadets, from all over the country – last year 2,902 training days. Seven professional staff have lost their jobs. £40,000 in food and facilities lost to the local economy annually. . . . To lose this boating station through no other reason than the intransigence of another Sea Cadet Units’ Management Committee is downright disgraceful, unprofessional, smacks of neglect and is not in the sprit of the Sea Cadets or Holyhead youth. | Quote from Forum Admin on Oct 30th, 2009, 8:09pm: The weekend was certainly a success Bill, enjoyed every minute. A draft chit to the Red Lea was a good one - roll on next year. I have just returned from a few days in Holyhead and witnessed the staff 'dismantling' the boating station readying for closure. Even under this adversity the guys were doing the job in a cheerfull and professional manner, though their future prospects were still unclear and uncertain - an emotional time. Their experience will be sorely missed. I trust the management committee of Prince of Wales SCC are proud of themselves. It is a very sad day especialy for the kids .To what i can see (i know things go much deeper)people just cant get onput there own thoughts and what not behind them and they shaould have thought of the kids .It is them that will dip out |

| Have been home a couple of days now since enjoying another of those great weekends in Scarborough. Bravo Zulu to Barbara & Ivan for finding that brilliant hotel & also a word of thanks to the helpers in the background. It is, of course sad that the boating station has been sunk & the staff have been tossed out of a job, they dont deserve that sort of treatment, we hope that they all find something very soon. Ivan kindly asked if I would do a write up/washup! which I am in the throes of, [what have I let myself in for] though the gazette deadline date has passed so I have till 1st of February to play with it. Again thanks to both these hard workers for all their efforts & look forward to the next one. Bill Lott |

| Well the latest news makes pretty sad reading, what a dreadful outcome. Are there any other avenues for sites in the near vicinity that could be made use of? I still cant believe that those on the Sea Cadet committee could have brought about this situation. I could think of some choice phrases to describe them, but I'll restain myself. Where do we go from here? Bill Lott |

| Following received from Stuart Wallace Just a brief note to advise that TS GANGES, the SCC National Boating Station in Holyhead, has won a reprieve and will now remain open until at least the end of 2009. The TS GANGES Support Group will be maintaining pressure to secure TS GANGES a longer term future. Unfortunately a potential site for relocation (the Old RNA building) was sold by auction during the course of this week, however other options remain. Efforts will also continue to improve relationships with the local SCC Unit, TS PRINCE OF WALES. I shall keep you informed of developments, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your backing to date. I am sure that this reprieve has been granted in no small part due to your tremendous support. Yours aye Stuart Wallace Lt – Cdr RNR President, TS GANGES Support Group |
